Jerry Hall’s Wedding Dress

When former model and actress Jerry Hall married media mogul/owner of News Corp/21st Century Fox (and probably the leader of the Illuminati), Rupert Murdoch in March this year, we learned two things. One being that Jerry’s still got it and two that Vivienne Westwood can do no wrong.

Jerry Hall

Jerry’s pale blue chiffon, silk and tulle dress hugged her body in ways that made you forget her age. The dress made by Vivienne Westwood swept down to her mid calves and tulle covered 4/5 of her arms in an elegance that is timeless. The chiffon that was used for the majority of the body was wrapped into soft sleeves from the top to the bottom and greeted a mesh overlay that showed a two-inch gap of skin at the bottom of the dress.

Masterfully paired with a matching headband and Roger Vivier flats, the ensemble is one to be remembered.

Kate Middleton’s Wedding Dress

Welcome to the most casual wedding of 2011. Kate Middleton wed Prince William surrounded by 1900 of their closest family and friends in April of 2011, setting a new standard for royal weddings.

Kate Middleton

The blushing bride was dressed in Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton, and was a vision in a long sleeved, white lace dress. The bodice, skirt and underskirt was made of French Chantilly and English lace (only the best) and the full skirt was crafted out of white satin gazar arches that were folded into pleats, meaning to represent an opening flower (sigh).

Kate Middleton

The minimalist look was topped off by a tulle veil, which was held in place by a super casual 1936 Cartier “halo” tiara, that was on loan from her highness the Queen herself. 10/10 the most casual royal wedding look thus far.

Nancy Shevell's Wedding Dress

When businesswoman Nancy Shevell married former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney in 2011, it was only natural that his daughter, fashion designer Stella McCartney, design the dress. And that she did. Taking inspiration from the Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson’s 1937 wedding gown, Stella recreated royal elegance by modernising the hemline.

Nancy Shevell

The dress Nancy wore on her special day was an ivory knee-length gown, which featured delicate button detail down the front and on the sleeves. The pinched-in waist and V-neck cut combined elegance and timelessness and paired with white kitten heels, the ensemble inspired from the 30’s was brought forward to the 21st century.

Kate Moss' Wedding Dress

Kate Moss’s July wedding to Jamie Hince in 2011 was a trip back in time, as the whole wedding was themed “The Great Gatsby”, including her dress! Moss walked down the aisle in a 30’s inspired John Galliano gown that featured intricate detailing using cheer panels and of course delicate beading. The floor length gown hugged the supermodel and included a modest V-neck cut and thick sheer shoulder straps.

Kate Moss

A Juliet-style-cap was paired with a thin white veil to truly reflect the era. To top off the outfit, Moss chose a blue-soled pair of Manolo Blahniks; after all she’s always had fabulous style.

Carrie Bradshaw's Wedding Dress

Style icon Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City, played by actress Sarah Jessica Parker, has always been an inspiration to women when hunting for their perfect wedding gown. The most coveted dress from the 2008 movie was the Vivienne Westwood champagne gown that Carrie wore to her wedding, only to be stood up by Big (in that gown, how could he?!).

The extravagant gown was taken from the Fall 2007 collection, and was tailored to perfection. Strapless, the neckline followed a classic V-neck however the tops of the V were exaggerated to create a fierce, angular shape, which reached toward the shoulders. The bodice was fitted beautifully and the skirt began to drape down over the hips before flowing down and out.

Layered detailing on the skirt created a voluminous effect, as Westwood contrasted the champagne satin with lighter ivory tones. Finally an ivory tulle veil was added, and a single teal feather was placed in carrie's severe up-do to provide a pop of colour.

If you have six months and around $15,700, this look can be recreated from the Westwood boutique in London. The net-a-porter version of the dress, which was ¾ length, unfortunately sold out in 2009. Tears.

Katniss Everdeen's Wedding Dress

The extravagant Swarovski crystal covered organza masterpiece that features as Katniss Everdeen's wedding dress in the 2013 Hunger Games movie: Catching Fire, was initially thought to be designed by the Alex Perry house. However the dress was actually created by Jakarta mastermind Tex Saverio, who has been known to dress the likes of Gaga and Kimmy K.

Katniss Everdeen

The magnificent gown is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. It incorporates an organza corset underneath a metal cage, metal pieces on top and laser cut feathers. The skirt is made up of layer upon layers of organza and chiffon ruffles, creating an airy and fluid look, perfect for twirling!

Julia Roberts Wedding Dress (from the movie Mirror Mirror)

The 2012 adaptation of Snow White, Mirror Mirror, see’s Julia Roberts (obviously playing the evil queen with more flare than one could ever wish for) in an eloquent Eioko Ishioka creation. The wedding gown was one of the Japanese designers’ last creations before her death in 2012, and features more grandeur than we can even handle.

Julie Roberts in Mirror Mirror

The champagne satin dress structures shard like layers that point toward the ground, ranging from small ones that adorn the fitted bodice and extend upwards at the shoulders, to larger ones, which literally scale down the skirt. The full, exaggerated princess style skirt is juxtaposed by delicate sleeves, which are sewn to puff out at the shoulder and pinch in at the wrist to reveal a gold cuff. Looking at this gown makes us believe in magic.

2000 - 2009

Janie Liszewski's Wedding Dress

Rather than us try to describe this dress and the events surrounding the design, Hanna Hartnell (the designer) did us the honour of sending us the entire story!

Hanna Hartnell

"Janie actually found me through a friend of hers in the entertainment world and she suggested me as a potential designer for her wedding gown.

The afternoon wedding was in the family home with a country French feeling with stone walls, grassy lawns and gardens.
Eddie was set on dressing very casually and I brought Italian linen trousers and several shirts (an Alexander McQueen in ivory pale grey won his favor). I don’t normally dress men in the wedding party, but Eddie is not a shopper and this was an easy assignment to make both the bride and groom happy. Note in the wedding photos, both are wearing flip flops!

As the designer, I work personally with each bride as we try on several gowns from my collection as a starting point for the eventual custom made couture gown, encompassing the specific details each bride is looking for. In Janie’s case, it came down to two styles, and eventually she chose the Flamingo design. This design has crossed straps in the back that begin narrow in front and get wider at the point they attach to the gown in the back.

Eddie Van Halen & Janie Liszewski

Janie is a very athletic woman and works out daily. When she came in for her fitting, about a month after our first meeting, it became apparent that her fitness program was developing her upper back and arms to a point that the cross straps ‘framed’ the muscular portion of her back and while impressive, not the feminine look she was hoping for.

We returned to her other favorite, the Phoenix gown, which is a halter neck, empire silhouette, with a very feminine detail of contrast band in blush that encircles the front, deep sides and forms a deep V at the center of the open back. The band becomes long ties that are looped into a bow with the ties falling to the hem of the train. It emphasized her small waist and beautifully framed her toned back while the color and bow emphasized her femininity.

We completed both gowns and she saved the Flamingo for a red carpet event in the future.

Luckily, I met with Eddie and Janie at their home to show Eddie his clothing choices, and it gave me a chance to see the home venue and feel confident that everything was just as they had envisioned. Janie wrote me a lovely thank you note later. Creating her wedding dress will always be a fond memory." - Hanna Hartnell

With the help of thirty seamstresses and six weeks of labour, the iconic gown made of 125 year old delicate rose point Brussels lace.

David Tutera

"My favorite wedding dress of all-time is Grace Kelly (Princess Grace of Monaco). The combination of fabrics, including antique Belgian lace, along with the fit and silhouette of her dress was truly fit for a princess. Her dress embodied classic elegance, style and grace, and decades later, is still defined by just that. " - David Tutera

The high collared dress with elegant lace sleeves and a full skirt had so many elements to it that even our heads were spinning. Rose point lace was used on the bodice, veil and train insert and thousands of tiny hand sewn pearls were added for that refined royal touch. The Silk faille skirt also had three layers, a foundation petticoat, a ruffled petticoat and a smoothing petticoat, to create that bell shape look.

"There is one wedding dress that in my eyes stands above all in the course of history - a divine match between a beautiful creation and a true princess beauty - Grace Kelly. It’s a lace masterpiece, very unique and bold in cut for that time and era. It’s a timeless style, that was so flattering on the beautiful Kelly, that the looks of it still echoes in my head from the first time I saw her pictures in it.

It’s has the long sleeves style that is very known in my bridal line as well, as I love the mix of very fitted dresses that are sexy and feminine, but with a classy modest twist in the form of sleeves. I also love the distinct waist line, that was very high, and hence elongating and flattering." - Berta Balilti

Princess Elizabeth’s gown that she so gracefully donned to marry Prince Philip in 1947 is perhaps one of the most intricate wedding dresses in history. Elizabeth’s gown followed traditional expectations, with long sleeves, a pinched waist and an elegant drop skirt which caressed the floor. Attached to the shoulders was a thirteen-foot silk tulle train, which nursed an even more intricate tulle veil embroided in a star pattern, giving the effect of floating flowers behind the bride.
